Rudolf Buchbinder

When: Sat., March 22, 8 p.m. and Sun., March 23, 3 p.m. 2008
Price: $42

Pianist Rudolf Buchbinderreturns to Cal Performances with the EastBay's equivalent of András Schiff's ongoing Beethoven sonata series for the San Francisco Symphony. Apart from being a different animal, Buchbinder has the advantage of the relative intimacy of Hertz Hall (Bancroft Way at Telegraph Ave., UC Berkeley), a far friendlier venue for solo piano than the multi-tiered Davies Symphony Hall. This weekend, he offers two back-to-back Beethoven sonata programs. The eight programmed sonatas are mostly from the early period, with the "Pastorale" and "Pathétique" scheduled for Saturday night, and the "Waldstein" to be performed on Sunday. Saturday, Mar. 22, 8 p.m. and Sunday, Mar. 23, 3 p.m. $42, with discounts and/or rush tickets for students and seniors.CalPerformances.net or 510-642-9988.
