Ruby Room's Sweet Sixteen

When: Thu., July 30, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: free
Beloved not the least by smokers, who are evermore annexed to smaller and smaller playpens in the Northern California wellness bubble, the Ruby Room is a quintessential Oakland dive. Dark, forbidding, dangerously wedged between a liquor store and a lake, the scuffed jewel of 14th Street is also the site of DJ nights, whether they feature dub reggae spun by old punks or rap bumped to a crowd of bike mechanics with inexhaustible social stamina. Thursday marks a special occasion: Sixteen years of operation. To wit, pro-disco jockey Jonathan Reddick is slated to select strictly pre-Y2K music for consumption, aided by Alfredo Botello, rumored to have actually been there sixteen years ago when the Ruby Room opened. It’s a celebration of regression at the year that some cultures deem the cusp of adulthood and, as always, the only door fee is 100 percent of your inhibitions.
