Roy Rogers & the Delta Rhythm Kings

When: Fri., Jan. 16, 8 & 10 p.m. 2009
Price: $20

Roy Rogers may be the best slide-guitar player in contemporary music; he's also a fine songwriter and the Grammy-winning producer of albums by John Lee Hooker and Ramblin' Jack Elliot. Rogers grew up in the Bay Area where his slashing lead guitar work with his band the Delta Rhythm Kings brought him to the attention of Hooker, who made him a featured player in his Coast to Coast Blues Band. Since 1986 the reformed Delta Rhythm Kings have been traveling the world wowing crowds with their high octane show, fueled by Rogers' amazing slide work. His latest album, Ballads Before the Rain, includes blues, jazz, and classical pieces, as well as "Riders on the Storm" and an appearance by the Doors' Ray Manzarek on piano weaving an almost ambient spell that's a far cry from the music he'll probably be playing Friday night.Roy Rogers and the Delta Rhythm Kings play Yoshi's(510 Embarcadero, Oakland) on Friday, Jan. 16. 8 & 10 p.m., $20.
