Roughing It

At the Twain Harte Triathlon

Sun 10/17

In his wonderful memoir Roughing It, author Mark Twain describes the humorous hurly-burly of life in the California gold fields. Bret Harte, another writer from back East who celebrated the wild and woolly sourdoughs in such stories as "The Outcasts of Poker Flat" and "The Luck of Roaring Camp," also was accustomed to the chilly early-autumn mornings of Tuolumne County. If they were alive today, Twain and Harte would not only be amused to find a town named after them, but also an athletic event -- Sunday's Twain Harte Triathlon at Twain Harte Lake outside Twain Harte on Highway 108 west of Sonora. As one of the last competitions of the season for On Your Mark Events, the fast, scenic triathlon course features a four-hundred-yard swim in the cold lake (wetsuits recommended), an eight-mile bike race along a rolling, tight loop course; and a three-mile foot race. More than two hundred contestants took part last year, and trophies and medals will be awarded to top male and female finishers. The entry fee ($40 advance, $45 raceday) includes refreshments, T-shirt, and a raffle ticket. The race starts at 10 a.m., with check-in at 8:30. Twain Harte is located on Lake View Road at Golf Club Road. For more info: 209-795-7832 or -- Kelly Vance

Bust 'Em

This ain't no Mile High

It always boils down to the Broncos. The Oakland Raiders have had a rotating cast of kick-'em-in-the-head opponents over the years -- Chiefs, Chargers, even the cross-bay 49ers -- but the team the Raiders have perennially most loved to hate is the Denver Broncos. Maybe it's the presence of former Raiders coach Mike Shanahan at the Denver helm. Maybe it's the ghost of John Elway. Today's Broncos (4-1), keyed by QB Jake Plummer and safety John Lynch, figure to dog the Raiders all the way through the season. But the dog may reach the end of his leash this Sunday (1:15 p.m.) at the Coliseum, if QB Kerry Collins, defensive tackle Warren Sapp (like Lynch, a Tampa Bay refugee), and kicker "Seabass" Janikowski have anything to say about it.
