Re: “Libraries on the Brink

Scare tactic or not, we need to voice our opinions and prepare for major budget cuts even if they aren't as drastic as originally proposed.

How could any proposal that cuts almost 75% of our city's libraries and almost 90% of its staff ever be seriously considered?! It should not be a choice between safety and libraries - there has to be a better way!

By being the main repository and disseminator of information (both written and digitized), our libraries serve one of the most important jobs in our community - to provide free and accessible information to all. Additionally, our libraries provide a safe and comfortable place for children to do homework, job seekers to look for work and skill building, parents to bring kids for programs, and for the elderly to maintain their intellect. Many community groups utilize our libraries for meetings as well; therefore, our libraries are a source of connection and networking too. Libraries help us to be better people by allowing us to further our quest for knowledge and self-improvement.

Our city and our society depend upon having access to free and easily accessible information! Much of our city unfortunately struggles with so many challenges - drugs, violence, dysfunctional families, poverty, unemployment, homelessness, addiction, inadequate public education, etc. - these challenges are exactly why Oakland needs its libraries!

Our city is only as strong as our libraries.

Re: “How Organic Is Organic?

To me, the bigger issue isn't about misleading labeling, but of health consequences. Why would anyone ever think to process food with a petroleum-based neurotoxin??? Just frightening that the U.S. food industry and the USDA would allow any use of hexane or any other toxic chemical!!!

Another argument for not eating anything processed. Yikes - I've been eating these bars almost on a daily basis for years thinking they were "healthy"!
