Rooney exists in a netherworld unique to a band that plies its trade somewhere between alt- and power-pop. Commercial-sounding enough to have been invited out on the road alongside The Jonas Brothers and Kelly Clarkson, the California quintet nonetheless has enough cache to also count The Strokes and Weezer as former tourmates. This could be due in part to the fact that frontman Robert Schwartzman is a sibling of hip, Gen-Y actor Jason Schwartzman (himself the former drummer of Phantom Planet). My money is more on the fact that Rooney actually has a knack for writing melodic pop gems overflowing with hooks, with nary a hint of Autotuner or any other studio buggery. After finding itself in an awkward fit as a major label act, the fivesome is self-releasing Eureka, its third full-length album. While the new record finds Rooney occasionally stumbling in, trying to recapture that Fab Four/Cars vibe evident in its earlier work, there still promises to be plenty of ear candy getting tossed around when they hit the stage at Slim's(333 11th St., San Francisco) on Tuesday, June 22. 8 p.m., $
