Ron Carter Trio with Mulgrew Miller and Russell Malone

When: Mon., May 24, 8 & 10 p.m., Tue., May 25, 8 & 10 p.m. and Wed., May 26, 8 & 10 p.m. 2010
Price: $12-$20

Double bassist Ron Carter has enough longevity to be the subject of several grainy black-and-white YouTube videos -- including the 1963 footage of a historic concert in Stockholm, with Miles Davis on trumpet, Herbie Hancock on piano, Wayne Shorter on sax, and Tony Williams holding down drum duties. Carter backed Miles' quintet for several years in the early Sixties, and later recorded with other legends from the Blue Note catalog (including Freddy Hubbard, Lee Morgan, and Andrew Hill). At this point, Carter is one of the only canonical jazz artists who is hip enough to get his albums reviewed in Vibe magazine. The Beastie Boys sampled one of his bass lines on their hit rap song, "Pass the Mic." At 73 years old, Carter still hangs with the most stylish cats on the scene. He'll appear at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero, Oakland) on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, May 24-26, with pianist Mulgrew Miller (who backed hip-hop drummer Karriem Riggins last year) and drummer Russell Malone. $12-$20.
