Comedy, Musical, Romance
One for the Guilty Pleasures file. There's some dirty fun to be had in writer-director John Turturro's long-shelved lowbrow musical saga of Nick Murder (James Gandolfini), a Queens, New York everyslob whose randiness lands him in his wife's (Susan Sarandon) doghouse, or, as the opening voiceover puts it: "Dead on arrival in her powdered jelly donut." Dig tarty redhead Tula (Kate Winslet), the lusty Liverpudlian lingerie shop owner who moves Nick to say: "God, you are one crude broad." Dig Cousin Bo (dancing Christopher Walken) and Nick's work buddy, Angelo (Steve Buscemi). And dig Turturro's choice of needle drops: "Prisoner of Love" by Cyndi Lauper, Nick Cave's "Little Water Song" sung by Ute Lemper, "It Must Be Him" by Vikki Carr, etc. Just don't put too fine a point on it, goombah. Costarring Bobby Cannavale, Aida Turturro, Barbara Sukowa, and Elaine Stritch (106 min., 2005).
