Roky Erickson & Okkervil River

When: Thu., May 20, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $29.50

Oftentimes mentioned in the same breath as fellow rock-'n'-roll savants Daniel Johnston and Syd Barrett, Roky Erickson became a cult figure as part of Austin's rich garage and psychedelic rock scenes both a as the leader of the 13th Floor Elevators and a solo act before the combination of drugs and mental illness sidetracked him. The heartbreaking 2005 documentary You're Going to Miss Me captured his story, and since then Erickson has gotten back on his feet after a decade of not playing music. With True Love Cast Out All Evil, his first album of new material in fourteen years, Erickson joined forces with fellow Texans Okkervil River to record songs penned over the past four decades, some of which date to a sting he spent in the Rusk State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in East Texas some years back. With studiomatesOkkervilRiver providing accompaniment for this tour, expect Erickson to be singing songs about Jesus, electro-shock treatment, and psychedelic mushrooms as he brings his inspirational comeback to the Bay Area by way of The Fillmore(1805 Geary Blvd., San Francisco) on Thursday, May 20. 8 p.m., $29.50.
