Light-hearted fun in a seriously deadly place, as washed-up Los Angeles rock music talent agent Richie Lanz (Bill Murray in classic snide form) visits Afghanistan and discovers a female would-be pop singer (played by Palestinian actress Leem Lubany) doing Cat Stevens covers in a cave, unbeknownst to her warlord father. Lowbrow merriment ensues. The more ridiculous the story gets, the better it works, thanks to Murray’s deadpan depravity as well as to world-weary scene-setting by director Barry Levinson (Wag the Dog) and screenwriter Mitch Glazer (Scrooged). Taking up the slack in Murray’s zany tour of the wasteland are Zooey Deschanel, Kate Hudson, Bruce Willis, and Danny McBride. Not exactly in the league of Stripes or Caddyshack, but more fun than any other 65-year-old comic could hope to inspire in a war zone (100 min.).
