Rock '‘n' Roll Show Prints

When: March 11-28 2009

GM once considered mounting LP turntables on coil springs in car trunks. Luckily, 8-track, cassettes, and other 1970s technological wizardry saved us from that hellish alternate universe, but our current CDs, dashboard displays, and intangible downloads have demanded the sacrifice of album-cover art. Now filling this visual vacuum are music-themed posters like those of graphic designer and silkscreener extraordinaire Lil Tuffy, who is showing 137 limited-edition prints at Kuhl Frames + Art. Commissioned by diverse bands (e.g., the Buzzcocks, Nostradamus, Thomas Dolby, the Dwarves, the Melvins, the Muffs, PereUbu, Bronx, Wu-Tang Clan, Mudhoney) for a variety of venues (the Independent, Hotel Utah, Bottom of the Hill), they span a range of styles and influences, from '50s cartooning and advertising to '60s Op, Pop, and psychedelia to photomontage and eclectic mixing and matching. Through March 28 at Kuhl Frames + Art (412 22nd St., Oakland) or 510-625-0123.
