Re: “Turning Water into Wine

Thank you for this excellent and informative article. As someone who resides in western Sonoma County I am living the nightmare of what this article addresses. While taking 5 minute showers, using gray water to care for my plants and hearing that my neighbors wells are drying up, it infuriates me when I pass by wineries in the middle of the day and see the water flowing as the vineyards are generously watered. When I walk in local parks, the once flowing streams are nothing more but mere trickles - if that much. Despite the community outcry and an unsuccessful lawsuit, a non-organic winery now sprays pesticides despite its close proximity to a number of schools exposing young young children , adults and wildlife to all kinds of poisons. And now there is the threat of the Dairyman Winery, Distillery and Event Center on the already congested Highway 12 between Santa Rosa and Sebastopol. The plan is to include 87,000 square feet of buildings, an annual capacity of 500,000 cases of wine and 250,000 gallons of distilled spirits and up to 58 events a year each with as many as 600 guests creating one of the largest wineries in Sonoma County.

My quality of life in rural Sonoma County is being threatened and compromised. It doesn't surprise me, but yes, it still upsets me to see the likes of Jerry Brown (and most of our other elected officials) putting the agribusiness ahead of the people they're supposed to represent. It's time for all of us to speak up, act out, write, organize and coordinate to stop this uncontrolled and unregulated takeover of our resources, land and quality of life. Let us remember that great quote by Margaret Mead, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
