Roan At The Gates

When: July 31-Aug. 18, 7 & 8 p.m. 2019
Price: $30-38
Secrets. We all have them. What’s not at all hidden in this two-hander by playwright Christina Gorman are the two giant, powerhouse roles written for women. Civil rights attorney Nat and her wife, Roan, an unassuming NSA analyst, confront a tangle of questions about marriage, whistleblowing, secret-keeping and national cyber security. Shades of Edward Snowden lace the central theme of the play, a thriller set in Washington, D.C. and Russia, like an ever-tightening net. Of course, what matters isn’t whether or not their relationship weathers the storm — unconscious bias assumes women care more about love than about their work, nobility, or truth. Mercifully, plays like this one expand the playing field. The intimate space at Berkeley City Club is the only counterforce.
