RJD2’s stylistically careening career remains unsullied by the commercial capitulation that’s so prevalent in post-millennial hip-hop. He makes beats, but RJD2 (Ramble John “RJ” Krohn) has never been just a beat-maker. His first proper album, 2002’s Deadringer, reset the bar for instrumental hip-hop. Weaving together soul vocal samples and 1970s rock breaks, RJD2 created seamless, enthralling tapestries of sound. Though hailed as an eminent producer upon Deadringer’s release, RJD2 wasn’t content to dominate one field. For 2007’s The Third Hand, he moved from Def Jux to the premiere indie rock imprint, XL. That album, which was produced entirely at home and without samples, also saw RJD2’s venture into songwriting. In 2010, dispensing with labels altogether, RJD2 established his own imprint to release The Colossus and last year’s More Is Than Isn’t. Atop his psych-tinged, hyperactive instrumentals fraught with queasy riffs, RJD2, who performs Friday at 1015 Folsom (1015 Folsom St., San Francisco) features stand-out lyricism from underground rappers — and not a single club banger to date.
