Action, Adventure, Science fiction
Go ahead and read any handy metaphors or allegories you want into this thrilling sci-fi doomsdayer — it’s big enough to hold them all. Despite the best intentions of scientist Will Rodman (James Franco), dozens of captured primates led by his hyper-intelligent pet chimpanzee Caesar (miraculously portrayed via CGI by actor Andy Serkis) break out of their cages and wreak havoc on San Francisco. What riled them up? Being the slaves of the humans. How did they manage it? The apes got smart from injections of an experimental new anti-Alzheimer’s drug being tested at the biotech company where Will works. The effects work and story settings are first-rate, and director Rupert Wyatt, of the British production house Picture Farm, keeps the plot boiling relentlessly for the full running time. We’ll never look at our cousins the same way again (108 min.)
