Crime drama
Lucky Gagin’s stay in the fictionalized US-Mexico border town of “San Pablo” is equal parts boozy dream and gangster-bedeviled nightmare. Fall guy protagonist Lucky is played by noir stalwart Robert Montgomery (Lady in the Lake), who directs from a script cobbled together by Ben Hecht, Charles Lederer, and Joan Harrison, adapted from the novel by Dorothy B. Hughes (In a Lonely Place). Character actor extraordinaire Thomas Gomez hams it up rewardingly as Pancho, proprietor of a merry-go-round and Lucky’s newfound drinking buddy. Seedy charm in abundance. Also with Wanda Hendrix, Fred Clark, Art Smith, and Andrea King (101 min., 1947, not rated) (K.V.)
