Rick Estrin & the Nightcats

When: Sat., May 9, 8 & 10 p.m. and Sat., Sept. 5, 8 & 10 p.m. 2009
Price: $20

Rick Estrin and the Nightcats are one of the best blues and jive combos in the states. They were born in Berkeley as Little Charlie and the Nightcats when guitarist Charlie Baty met Estrin and they put together a combo to play their highly energetic, crowd-pleasing mix of '50s rock, soul, surf, swing, and jump blues. They've been tearing it up all around the world ever since. When Baty announced his semi-retirement early last year, guitarist Chris Anderson, who played with Charlie Musselwhite as well as his own combo, stepped up to fill his formidable shoes. With Anderson in tow, Estrin and the Nightcats show no signs of slowing down. They play Biscuits and Blues (401 Mason St., San Francisco) on Friday, Mar. 27. 8 & 10 p.m., $20. BiscuitsandBlues.com
