Re: “Speaking Tango with Trio Garufa

I'm not sure if Rachel Swan knows any other dance styles but for sure she doesn't know jack about social Argentine tango. True, the close embrace style (aka milonguero) is not as flashy as club (aka salon) tango or show tango (not performed during a milonga) but as an adherent of social Argentine tango I can vouch for it’s authenticity when possibly the greatest Argentine tango dancer, Carlos Gavito, declared social Argentine tango is the dance of the embrace. When he was at the Verdi many years ago I watched maestro Gavito dance an entire song while moving only 20 ft down the line of dance!

Many people outside the Argentine tango culture have a difficult time accepting intrusion into their personal space and I was one who found it difficult when I first learned tango. But gradually I adapted and discovered the many subtle nuances of the dance despite the lack of space between my partner and me. I highly recommend Ms. Swan learn this wonderful dance by coming to classes. lists a huge number of venues from which she can learn. No room for improvisation??? Improvisation is the foundation of social Argentine tango! When she has acquired enough knowledge and skill she will finally understand why this dance is not anachronistic nor obsolete.
