Rich Robinson

When: Sat., Nov. 12, 9:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $20

No longer the angry young man he was while fronting The Black Crowes, Rich Robinson has mellowed considerably. And he's become a family man. Recently remarried, the father of four just welcomed a new son into his growing brood. And while his main band is on a hiatus of undetermined length, Robinson has kept busy, collaborating with everyone from Patti Smith to the late Howard Zinn. He's also gotten around to releasing Through a Crooked Sun, the follow-up to his 2004 solo debut Paper. Whereas the former was little more than extension of the work he'd done with his older brother Chris (all raunchy riffs, solid harmonies, and frenetic energy), this recent collection of songs finds Robinson creating a rootsier vibe. Plus he addresses everything from lifelong insecurities, to materialism. Robinson and his crew have avoided dipping into the Black Crowes canon during this tour, but they've been known to bust out quirky covers of Buffalo Springfield, Manassas, and Jellyfish. As to whether they'll trot out a version of the Fleetwood Mac nugget "Station Man" that they cut for the new album, you'll only find out if you hit Café du Nord (2170 Market St., San Francisco) on Saturday, Nov. 12. 9:30 p.m., $20.
