Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca

When: Sat., May 7, 1 p.m. 2011
Price: free
Born in Congo and raised in Los Angeles, Ricardo Lemvo says his dream was to create a fusion of Congolese and Cuban rumba. After years of searching for the right musicians, he put together Makina Loca in 1990, and he's been pursuing a global Afrocentric sound ever since. Style-wise, he's omnivorous, and his music combines the hard percussive edge of many kinds of Caribbean music - including Cuban son, salsa, bomba, and merengue, with the lilting sway of the Congo. He's a charismatic frontman able to serenade the crowd in English, Spanish, French, Lingala, and Portuguese, and the band is never less than smoking. At Yerba Buena Gardens (701 Mission St., San Francisco) on Saturday, May 7. 1 p.m., free. YBCA.org.
