Fresh from the headlines of 1955, this less-than-explosive drama of middle-class malaise pits philandering hubby and dull salaryman Leonard DiCaprio against his bored, restless, artsy, also philandering wife (Kate Winslet), stuck in the suburbs when she’d rather be sipping espresso in a Paris café with Jean-Paul Sartre. Something’s gotta give. That would be the concept of the film itself, adapted from Richard Yates’ novel of 1962 by screenwriter Justin Haythe and director Sam Mendes (Winslet’s real-life husband). The only refuge from the storm of soap-operatic clichés is Michael Shannon’s bit part as an emotionally disturbed man who sees through the whole charade. You could do the same — you don’t have to be crazy to beware this stuffed turkey (119 min.).
