A surprising sports movie not about the road to triumph, but the end of the road taken after the triumph is gone and forgotten by all but the man who once achieved it. Samuel L. Jackson stars as the Champ, a boxer who went head to head with Rocky Marciano and was ranked number three in the world; punch-drunk and homeless now, he shuffles and mumbles his way through Skid Row in Denver. Josh Hartnett is Erik, the ho-hum sportswriter who discovers his story and helps, er, resurrect both of their lives. It's a story of manly codependency and, more importantly, inspiration -- which is sorely lacking in American cinema these days.
