Documentary, War
Talk about embedded. Journalist filmmakers Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger spent months glued to a platoon of US Army troops in the Taliban-infested Korengal Valley in eastern Afghanistan (“the deadliest place on earth”) as the soldiers man a treacherous forward outpost. Mundane tasks like burning their excrement alternate with tribal shura meetings with valley elders and the incessant firefights. The net result is that we learn to respect the young soldiers, brash and childish as they are, because they perform a duty no one would wish on his worst enemy. One of the very few documentaries from the Iraq-Afghanistan war years that lingers when the lights go up (93 min.).
