Action/Adventure, Drama, War
Werner Herzog liked the story behind his 1997 documentary, Little Dieter Needs to Fly, so much that he remade it as a narrative feature, with actor Christian Bale -- in subdued Chuck Norris mode -- as Dieter Dengler, a German-born US Navy bomber pilot shot down over Laos in 1965 and imprisoned in a Pathet Lao POW camp. Best parts: the painfully realistic scenes of Dengler's capture, imprisonment, and escape through the treacherous jungle, filmed among the hill tribes of Thailand. Worst part: the sub-Howard-Hawks ending. In the hierarchy of writer-director Herzog's Jungle Book, this one falls a bit below Aguirre and Fitzcarraldo, but that doesn't mean you won't sweat it out when the going gets tough. Costarring Jeremy Davies and Steve Zahn as Dengler's fellow POWs.
