Rent Romus and Heikki Koskinen’s Manala

When: May 25-26, 8 p.m. 2019
Price: $10.00 - $20.00
Far away from the bright lights of SFJAZZ and Yoshi’s, Richmond saxophonist Rent Romus keeps the plasma pumping through the Bay Area’s alt-jazz scene as the proprietor of Edgetone Records, the impresario of the free improv-oriented Outsound Presents, and the leader of the exploratory Life’s Blood Ensemble. In recent years Romus has been delving into his Finnish roots, a journey that has taken him in some fruitful musical directions. With Manala, he and Finnish-born Heikki “Mike” Kosikinen (on e-trumpet, tenor recorder, and kantele, a Baltic zither) have created an epic work inspired by the mythology of far north cultures, music presented by the Berkeley Finnish Heritage Society. Life’s Blood is an extraordinary ensemble featuring vibraphonist Mark Clifford, violinist Gabby Fluke-Mogul, bassists Max Judelson and Safa Shokrai, saxophonist Joshua Marshall, drummer Timothy Orr, and sonic adventurer Cheryl E. Leonard on natural inventions, percussion, and cello.
