Reggie Watts

When: Fri., June 1, 9 p.m. 2012

The label "performance artist" does Reggie Watts no justice, though it's probably the only way to lump all his disparate talents. A comedian, beatboxer, DJ, sometime balladeer, and master of extreme vocal timbres, Watts can craft a satisfying one-man show without writing anything down ahead of time. When he performed with jazz pianist Robert Glasper at Yoshi's, the two of them went off script for most of the evening, regaling audiences with mock slow jams and an uncanny impersonation of Jay-Z. But it wasn't all levity -- they interspersed the light moments with serious, soulful jazz and R&B music, much of it characterized by gospel-chord voicings and nimble piano runs. Watts will bring that mix of wry wit and artistic sophistication to his one-man show at The Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco) on Friday, June 1, which will feature improvised sets on a looping machine. And just to sweeten the pot, fabulous local comedian (and Cal alum) Chris Garcia opens. Looks like it's sold out, but check Craigslist for tickets. 9 p.m., $25.
