Re: “Merritt College Nursing Woes

Merritt A.D.N. 2008 Graduate

The disorganization in Merritt's Faculty and Staff - especially during application and admissions period takes a prospective student into a whirlwind of anxiety. I was admitted through the LVN-RN upgrade, 2 weeks before a bridge summer semester. Most of my required credentials, transcripts, health information were misplaced about 5 separate occasions in the 3 semesters I was enrolled.

The majority of the time allotted in classrooms for lectures to learn theory was spent with teachers sharing stories and anecdotes throughout their career. It is understood that the nursing profession and programs are not a walk in the park, but with very little direction, limited community college budget, sub-par textbooks with (mis)information compounded most of the student's worries. However, there are a few gems in Merritt's Program who nurtured future nurses in their endeavor.
- Waduda is a friendly face with words of encouragement in the nursing office.
- Ms. Mia Kelly M.S.N. our instructor for Pharmacology and Advanced Med
Surg. She challenged each student individually, by far gave the most
comprehensive lectures in the whole program and gave ample one on one
interaction with students at our clinical site.
- Ms. Barrios who joined the faculty in campus my last semester. She was my
Clinical Instructor my first rotation at Alta Bates.

Students, if this program is a path you would like to take for yourselves and feel that you would be an excellent caregiver, by all means push trough. You will understand and reaffirm the love we all have for the nursing profession, The joy you feel once you enter the workforce will eclipse the difficulties we all felt.
