Drama, War
Filmmaker Brian De Palma's exceedingly grim and ugly anti-war story tells of the rape and murder of a teenage Iraqi girl by US troops, circa 2006 —- rigged to look like candid, YouTube-style videos made on the scene, but really scripted, acted by professionals, and directed by De Palma. If he's pissed off, it's because eighteen years after his Vietnam atrocity pic Casualties of War, we're in another no-win conflict that brings out the worst in Americans. Boiling-point performances by Patrick Carroll, Rob Devaney, and Angel Salazar as the goonish, then repentant, soldiers. Not perfect, but a genuine, outraged polemical drama by a director (Carrie, The Untouchables, Carlito's Way) with occasional flashes of brilliance (90 min., 2007).
