Director Catherine (Lords of Dogtown) Hardwicke’s teen-romance rehab of the ancient fairytale is a bit corny and obvious, but true to its medieval roots as a tale of the struggle between light and darkness. It would have been nice if the wolf-monster weren’t so CGI-fakey, but what else would we expect? Both Amanda Seyfried and Julie Christie are effective as Riding Hood and her artsy-craftsy grandma, Gary Oldman less so as hammy, werewolf-hunting churchman Father Solomon, who levels his own personal inquisition on the haunted village. Better than just another imitation Twilight, but that’s all it really is. Pleasant Goth-style art direction. Screenplay by David Johnson (Orphan). Also with Billy Burke and Virginia Madsen. (100 min.)
Director: Catherine Hardwicke
Cast: Amanda Seyfried, Max Irons and Shiloh Fernandez
