Spike Lee in coasting gear. Thirteen-year-old Atlanta resident Silas “Flik” Royale (Jules Brown) gets dumped off on his Red Hook bible-thumping grandfather Bishop Enoch (Clarke Peters) for the summer, and learns all kinds of things about living in the Brooklyn projects, girls (Toni Lysaith as Chazz Morningstar), and life in general. The fulminating preachments of the Bishop and Deacon Zee (Thomas Jefferson Byrd) are wildly entertaining, but after at least three scenes of gospel shouting the novelty wears off. See this for the freshness of young actors Brown and Lysaith and let the rest go. Written and directed by Lee, who knows the turf probably a little too well. (121 min.)
