Red Fang

When: Thu., Nov. 3, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $28

Red Fang could easily win the award for metal-band-having-the-most-fun. There's no pretense, no posing -- just four scruffy dudes from the Northwest cranking molten stoner-rock riffs. Their video for the single "Wires" shows them barreling through all manner of random items (watermelons, mannequins, gallons of milk, TVs) in a vintage stationwagon welded with a battering ram. Live, the band is incredibly solid, creating an equally enjoyable experience for fans. The Portlandband's second full-length, Murder the Mountains, released on Relapse Records, balances headbang-worthy sludge with psychedelic and heavy rock, while never sacrificing the hooks -- it was produced by The Decemberists' Chris Funk, after all. The band makes an apt opener for Mastodon, whose latest album, The Hunter, embodies a similarly mainstream-accessible metal aesthetic. They play The Warfield (982 Market St., San Francisco) on Thursday, Nov. 3, with The Dillinger Escape Plan. 8 p.m., $28. TheWarfieldTheatre.com
