Biography, Historical drama
The one thing everyone knows about J.D. Salinger, other than that he wrote The Catcher in the Rye, is that, fed up with the public duties of a literary celebrity, he retreated to a New England farmhouse for the last forty years of his life. We’d like to discover more about the author, but this rather dry character study doesn’t take much joy, either in describing Salinger’s dissatisfied personality or invoking the rebellious spirit that made the misadventures of his Holden Caulfield “must reading” for successive generations of American youth. Actor-turned-director Danny Strong assembles some of the right ingredients, but doesn’t seem to know what to do with them. Starring Nicholas Hoult as Salinger, with Kevin Spacey as Columbia lit prof Whit Burnett, his admiring mentor (106 min., 2017, rated PG-13)
