This is a past event.

When: July 7-29 2011

Five artists are showing together in ReAwaken: Uso y Cultura (Style and Culture), highlighting today's multiethnic urban culture with mixtures of past and present and real and imaginary, curated by Eric Murphy and artist Gabriel Navar. Roberto Aristides Alvarado's paintings and sculptures mix Mayan art motifs with modernist style, while Christine Balza's paintings and sculptures recontextualize traditional Filipino culture -- especially the lost 19th-century Baybayin tattoo symbolism -- for young Anglo tribespeople. James Gayles' watercolors depict modern Afro-American figures juxtaposed or combined with images from art history and anthropology, while Navar's satirical paintings depict daily life in all its iPhone-ready surreality. Hiroko To's untitled photos of glass orbs semi-immersed in blue liquid depict the Zen meditation ideal of mu, a kind of calm exaltation. Artists' talk on July 21, 5-8 p.m. ReAwaken runs through July 29 at Craft and Cultural Arts Gallery (1515 Clay St., Oakland). 510-622-8190 or
