Comedy drama
Luciano (played by Aniello Arena) is a classic everyman, a nervous but amicable husband and father who augments the income from his fresh fish stand in a working-class Naples neighborhood by getting into costume and performing at social gatherings. One day, in filmmaker Matteo Garrone’s delicious comic/pathetic slice of life, he decides to audition for “Big Brother,” a popular TV reality show – and suddenly his life begins to turn unreal. Writer-director Garrone (he made the fascinating Gomorrah) finds the perfect tone for Luciano’s showbiz dream life. Alexandre Desplat’s musical score is especially wonderful. And actor Arena makes us see the world through Luciano’s dazed eyes in a remarkable performance. Recommended. Costarring Loredana Simioli and Nando Paone. (116 min.)
