In his seventeen years as a professional jazz saxophonist, Ravi Coltrane certainly has lived up to his awesome lineage as the second son of John and Alice Coltrane. The New York musician was only two when his dad died, but he has absorbed the essence of John's probing, profoundly spiritual approach to music, along with influences from such other players as Steve Coleman and Ornette Coleman, to forge a path of his own, both as an improviser and composer. And like his father, Ravi plays both soprano and tenor saxophones and works in a quartet format, currently with Venezuelan pianist Luis Perdomo(who has recorded two CDs for Ravi's RKM Music label), Swedish bassist Massimo Biolcati, and Florida-born drummer E.J. Strickland. This stunningly cohesive unit appears at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero West, Oakland) on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3 and 4, at 8 and 10 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 5, at 2 and 7 p.m. $12-$20.
