Action/Adventure, Animation
Quick-witted animated Western spoof gets plenty mileage out of good writing, a grand sense of fun, and the voice of Johnny Depp as a chicken-hearted chameleon stranded in a dry, dusty town called Dirt. Director and frequent Depp enabler Gore Verbinski (he helmed the Pirates of the Caribbean movies) peppers the rootin’ tootin’ proceedings with references and cameos: Hunter Thompson, Clint Eastwood (voiced by Timothy Olyphant), Chinatown, etc. But Depp’s line readings tilt it more toward Don Knotts than to Sergio Leone. And the lively village varmints (voices of Isla Fisher, Harry Dean Stanton, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, et al.) are a further advance along the line set by Fantastic Mr. Fox. Screenplay by John Logan, from a story he wrote with Verbinski and James Ward Byrkit. (107 min.)
