Crime drama
Woody Harrelson turns in a smart, nasty performance as Dave “Date-Rape” Brown, an LAPD officer up to his chevrons in dirty business. When he isn’t hot-boxing a meth lab suspect or shaking down hotels and drugstores, sex-club habitué Dave is dispensing deadly street justice one step ahead of raging DA Steve Buscemi. And did we mention that he shares a house with his two ex-wives – sisters, played by Anne Heche and Cynthia Nixon – and listens to rightwing late-night talk radio? If the frantic rhythms of Dave’s life ring a bell, it’s because they were created by crime novelist James Ellroy, who wrote the original screenplay with director Oren Moverman (The Messenger). The rest of the cast is just as strong: Robin Wright, Ben Foster, Sigourney Weaver, and Ice Cube as various stressed Angelenos. But it’s Harrelson who scorches the earth. The action takes place during the late 1990s police corruption scandal in the title district, obviously one of Ellroy’s favorite eras. (108 min.)
