Rookie director Alison Eastwood gets solid, salt-of-the-earth performances from Kevin Bacon and Marcia Gay Harden in the sweet, simple story of a morose childless couple -— a railroad engineer and his nurse wife, dying of breast cancer —- whose lives are further complicated when the engineer's train kills a distraught woman who purposely pulled her car onto the tracks with her son by her side. Then a few days later, the orphaned boy shows up at the engineer's door. Like her famous actor/filmmaker father, Eastwood excels in the details of working-class American life, and Bacon is appropriately Clint-like as buttoned-up Tom Stark. Original screenplay by Micky Levy. With Miles Heizer as the kid, Davey (96 min., 2007).
