Radical Graphics of Taller Tupac Amaru

When: Nov. 30-Jan. 13 2008

ProArts is showcasing work produced by Taller TupacAmaru, an artist group that's committed to keeping the art of printmaking alive, especially for political action. The gallery is covered with posters conceived and created over the last decade or so by Favianna Rodriguez, Jesus Barraza, Melanie Cervantes, Tony Carranza and EstriaMiyashiro. They celebrate and memorialize major figures from political movements -- Martin Luther King, Jr., Edward Said, Frida Kahlo, Leonard Peltier, Angela Davis -- as well as iconic images of Palestinian and Venezuelan and agricultural revolutionaries. Some advertise hip-hop shows and political actions and Xicana Moratorium Day. With their bright flat colors and clear lines, the posters take the relation between politics, art, and production very seriously. They also make good presents. Artists talk on Saturday, Jan. 12 from noon to 1:30 p.m. Through January 13 at 550 Second St., or 510-763-4361.
