Rachid Taha

When: Sat., June 5, 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $22-$25

The Algerian-born and Paris-based singer, songwriter and producer RachidTahacalls his boundary-breaking music global pop. Taha's universal knowledge of groove music creates tunes that are just as likely to drop in a reference to Bollywood soundtracks as they are to borrow from Arab techno and American hip-hop. He started as a punk rocker and became a well-known DJ before he began collaborating with ex-Gong guitarist Steve Hillage, a partnership that has produced almost a dozen unclassifiable albums including his current outing Bonjour, an exploration of the more commercial side of Arab music. RachidTaha and his band play Saturday, June 5, at the Great American MusicHall (859 O'Farrell St., San Francisco). 8 p.m., $22, $25.
