Kym (Anne Hathaway) is model-beautiful but she’s a recovering addict with a guilty past who can never let go of her pain, and so the woodsy Connecticut wedding of her estranged sister becomes a sort of Family Tension Olympics, courtesy Jenny Lumet’s (daughter of Sidney) screenplay for director Jonathan Demme. It’s overloaded with eye-candy decor and incidental music but dramatically stripped down despite its large, Altmanesque cast, and Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada) steals the show. Demme’s best since The Manchurian Candidate. With Bill Irwin as the girls’ huggy father, Rosemarie DeWitt as the equally selfish sister Rachel, and Debra Winger as the combative divorced mother (117 min.).
