Quicksand is a New York City post-hardcore band that only released two albums during its career in the Nineties, but which nonetheless maintains an exalted status in the hearts and minds of young (and young-at-heart) hardcore kids. Led by Walter Schreifels, who had already clocked time in Gorilla Biscuits and Youth of Today, the band combined the grinding low end of metal with a Fugazi-ishangsty-ness. Coupled with Schreifels' perfectly scratchy/shouty voice, the music bridged the gap between hardcore and alternative rock. Underneath the gritty tension, however, Schreifels also proved an incredibly gifted pop songwriter, which became even more apparent in Schreifels' post-Quicksand band Rival Schools -- although Quicksand fans decried that band's more mainstream sound. Now, purists can rejoice: Quicksand is back with its first North American tour in fifteen years, which stops by The Regency Ballroom (1300 Van Ness Blvd., San Francisco) on Monday, Jan. 21, with Title Fight. 8 p.m., $26.50.
