Queer Powder

It's Gay and Lesbian Ski Week at Tahoe's South Shore

A rainbow will appear over Tahoe this weekend. The Winter Party at Lake Tahoe, the inaugural gay and lesbian ski week produced by Ascent, begins Sunday, with a full week of winter sports and outdoor recreation -- boarding and skiing at Heavenly and Sierra-at-Tahoe, snowshoeing, ice skating, cross-country, even snowmobiling -- atop the many feet of powder dropped on Tahoe this season, the snowiest winter in years. Not all the action is on the slopes, of course. Nighttime entertainment includes the Indigo Girls at Caesar's Tahoe on March 5, comedy with Judy Gold, Howie Nave, and Scott Kennedy at Harvey's, "dragappella" music with The Kinsey Sicks at Harrah's, a production of The Vagina Monologues, and nightly DJ dance parties at Club Nero and Altitude. Also, there's something called the Tubing Derby. Don't ask. The festivities run through March 6. For more info on Ascent and to register, visit AscentLakeTahoe.com. Then go home and pack your woolies. – Kelly Vance

Things you could do -- if you really wanted to -- at this weekend's Tri Valley Sportsmen's Expo in Pleasanton: Check out a Rock Crawler (the latest ATV). Cast a fly. Cook a wild boar in the Northern California Dutch Oven Cooking Demo. Watch pooches catch Frisbees at the Splash Dog Competition. For the kids: Catch fish (then release them). Call a turkey. Pet a baby buffalo. Make bead necklaces. Tell fishing stories. The Expo happens Friday through Sunday at the Alameda County Fairgrounds (4501 Pleasanton Ave., Pleasanton). $10, kids twelve and under free. For more info, visit SportsExpos.com. -- Kelly Vance

Engaging Bull

Bowl, Brew, Brawl, Band. Sounds like a reg'lar night out in Houston, Texas, although not necessarily in that order. But the Bay Area puts a different spin on that proposition, courtesy of the ACE-CLUB, a Silicon Valley-based social group standing for "adventure, camaraderie, entertainment." Saturday night at City Beach's Club House in Fremont (4020 Technology Pl.), invitees of the club for professionals can roll a few games of Hyperbowling, grab a brew at the bar, and then try on some of City Beach's oversize boxing equipment for a fun, light-contact "brawl." After that comes the bar band, with more brew. Sound like fun? Go to Ace-Club.com for more details. -- Kelly Vance
