At this point, "the four elements" are so ingrained in hip-hop's definition of itself that they're often taught in scholarly classes. Consumers who grew up in an era dominated by Young Money and Maybach Music might not remember a time when the genre wasn't wholeheartedly focused on commercialism, but it actually wasn't that long ago that emcees were name-checking their DJs instead of their luxury cars. Local emcee and spoken-word poet Aima the Dreamer certainly remembers those halcyon days, and she'd argue that the genre still has artistic pillars -- moreover, it has room for femininity. Aima and a host of other emcees will celebrate both at the fifth iteration of Queendom: Fly Ladies Reppin' the Four Elements of Hip-Hop. It will feature Detroit emcee (and cult favorite) Invincible, The Mamaz, DJs Zita and Lady Ryan, dancing by SF Soulstars and Bay Area Steppers, and artwork by Agana and Wrenegade. The event happens Saturday, June 2, at La Peña Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley). 9 p.m., $10, $12.
