Pusaka Sunda Gamelan Degung

When: Fri., May 8, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $10-$15

PusakaSunda Gamelan Degung was created by San Jose-based suling (flute) player, master musician, and composer BurhanSukarma in 1988. The group's name translates as "heirloom of Sunda," and a degung is a small gamelan ensemble. PusakaSunda Gamelan Degungis a ten-piece group that plays waves of rippling, interlocking rhythms on resonant brass gongs to support the free-flowing improvisations of Sukarma'ssuling. The ensemble includes Javanese and American musicians who create music with hypnotic, deeply soothing melodies highlighted by the bright, chiming accents of the high-pitched peking. PusakaSunda Gamelan Degung performs at the Jazzschool (2087 Addison St., Berkeley) on Friday, May 8. 8 p.m., $10-$15.
