Punk Rock Joel's Birthday

When: Sat., Jan. 31, 7:30 p.m. 2009
Price: $8

Ten years ago, Hunx was a dewey-eyed, aspiring stylist from Tucson who came to the Bay Area for an abortive stint in beauty school, wound up as a dancer -- then singer -- in the electro-punk band Gravy Train!!!!, and reinvented the androgynous-male-heartthrob prototype that David Bowie and Boy George popularized in the '80s. Like his forebears, Hunx is a sassy, flamboyant gender-bender with boyish charm and a taste for cosmetics. But he chose to flaunt his gay identity, rather than fight it: Hunx' vast repertoire includes joke numbers about blow jobs and male anatomy, along with giddy romantic ballads and bad-boyfriend songs modeled after 1950s girl groups (i.e., his new hit, "GimmieGimmie Back Your Love"). Hunx now fronts a trash-rock outfit that's quickly rising in local renown, Hunx and His Punx. They'll headline 924 Gilman on Saturday, Jan. 31, with Thorns of Life, ReVolts, Off With Their Heads, and Comadre also performing. 8 p.m., $8.
