Action/Adventure, Suspense/Thriller
The Michael Mann-Johnny Depp version of legendary Midwestern outlaw John Dillinger’s life and times delves deeply into the Great Depression, with a moody, fatalistic Dillinger (Depp) trying in vain to outrun G-man crook-hunter Melvin Purvis (stoic Christian Bale) while knocking off hick-town banks. As dramatized by director Mann and co-writers Ronan Bennett and Anne Biderman (they adapted Bryan Burrough’s book), Dillinger presented a threat to both J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI and organized crime — he had to go. But on his way out, there are enough jail breaks, ambushes, and tommy guns to satisfy anyone’s violent fantasies of a populist Robin Hood. Terrific supporting cast: Marion Cotillard as Dillinger’s girlfriend, Stephen Dorff as a henchman, Billy Crudup as the prissy Hoover, Lili Taylor as a 1930s female sheriff, Stephen Lang as a grim Fed, et al. Gorgeous cinematography by Dante Spinotti. Somber but magnificent (140 min.).
