Protest in Paris 1968: Photographs by Serge Hambourg

When: March 12-June 1 2008

As 2008 shapes up as a political watershed year , it's time to revisit the turmoil of forty years ago, when revolt against the American War (as the Vietnamese called it) and the establishment filled the air. LBJ dropped out; Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were shot; and antiwar protesters got brutally clubbed -- as the whole world watched Chicago. In France, mass strikes against De Gaulle's rightist government shut down the economy for two weeks in May. Serge Hambourg, a photojournalist for Le nouvelobervateur, was there, and in his 35 photos, springtime in Paris, soixante-huit, comes alive: Godard filming Cinematheque demonstrators; Danny the Red mocking old-guard communist Louis Aragon; Gaullists with their Vous Mon Géneral banner; barricades, cobblestones, and street posters (Nona la cour$e du profit en Médicine! and Non a la bureaucratie!). Protest in Paris 1968: Photographs by Serge Hambourgruns through June 1 at the BerkeleyArt Museum (2625 Durant Ave., Berkeley). BAMPFA.berkeley.edu or 510-642-0808.
