Protection Shields 2.0: The Alignment

In honor of her ancestors from the Tribe of the Middle Passage, retired geologist and visual artist Gale Madyun produces spiritual assemblage pieces that are meant to reconnect viewers to who they truly are. In the past, her mystic work has been featured at the Oakland International Film Festival, and she’s presented workshops to spread her message of art as a form of healing. In her latest exhibit, Protection Shield 2.0: The Alignment, Madyun focuses on creating shields for women who are recovering from an accident. With palm fronds, Madyun makes anatomical heart-shaped structures and attaches bits of forgotten daily essentials, like skeleton keys or dangly earrings, to them. Then, she further embraces nature by adding bird feathers or sunflowers. Each piece exists as a form of protection against moments out of our control, which in turn, hopefully heals suffering and makes one feel whole again.
