Rated PG-13 · 88 minutes · 2008

It seems no '70s and '80s horror movies are safe from the remake machine, even the god-awful ones like 1980’s Jamie-Lee Curtis-starring Prom Night. The 2008 upgrade has been downgraded from a bloody R -– kind of necessary for the slasher sub-genre it originally belonged to –- to a teen-skewed, relatively bloodless PG-13 that has almost nothing to do with its source material. This time around, Donna (Brittany Snow) and her friends are stalked by a psycho who killed her family three years earlier and just escaped from a maximum-security asylum (wow, imagine the odds). Unfortunately, director Nelson McCormick thinks clichés mocked in horror parodies are adequate storytelling and scare devices. Don’t rent the original; don’t buy a ticket to the remake (88 min.).
